Come join UNC MSA's annual Fast-A-Thon! Fast-A-Thon is a campus-wide effort encouraging non-Muslims to experience a day of fasting.
The money raised from this year's Fast-A-Thon will be donated to Pakistan flood victims:
It has been a natural disaster described in superlatives: the biggest calamity in Pakistan's history, worst monsoon rains and floods in 80 years, a natural disaster affecting more people than the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, and the 2005 Pakistan Earthquake combined (according to the UN). In just over 8 days, flooding across the length and breadth of Pakistan has killed more than 1600 people and rendered about 13 million people homeless, triggering the biggest internal displacement of people since the 1994 exodus in Rwanda. More torrential rainfall and flooding is predicted for the coming days as thousands of people flee for high ground and dry land, clutching onto whatever little possessions they can hang on to while on the run.
The fast will occur on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 from 5:21am to 7:35pm. NO FOOD OR DRINK can cross your throat until 7:35pm. For everyone who fasted, we extend an invitation to the Great Hall at 7:00pm on Wednesday so that everyone can break their fast together with free food!
The Fast-A-Thon is being co-sponsored with the following organizations:
Sangam
Aasha
We are also encouraging everyone to donate their lunch money for the day to help Pakistani flood victims. We ask that you donate a minimum of $5, or however much you would have paid for lunch that day. All proceeds go to help the flood victims.
